Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
Theme: The struggle for freedom against the apartheid regime in South Africa.
1. The Inauguration Day (10th May 1994)
- Takes place in the Union Buildings amphitheater in Pretoria.
- Mandela calls it a "Rainbow Gathering" of different colors and nations.
- He is sworn in as the first Black President of South Africa.
- Both national anthems were played: 'Nkosi Sikelel -iAfrika' (Blacks) and 'Die Stem' (Whites).
2. Meaning of Courage
Mandela says: "Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."
3. Twin Obligations
Every man has two obligations:
- To his family (parents, wife, children).
- To his people (community, country). In a society like South Africa, it was impossible for a man of color to fulfill both.
4. Concept of Freedom
- Childhood: Freedom meant to run in fields, swim in streams (Transitory).
- Adulthood: Freedom meant the dignity to earn a living and marry.
- Political Awakening: Realized that his freedom was indivisible; the chains on any one of his people were the chains on all of them.
5. The Oppressor and the Oppressed
Mandela states that both need to be liberated. A man who takes away another man's freedom is a prisoner of hatred.
Quote to Quote: "Man's goodness is a flame that can be hidden but never extinguished." 🔥🇿🇦
